Tomoko Kunita, Ph.D., L.M.F.T.

kunita.jpgTomoko Kunita has practiced psychotherapy for eleven years before joining the Adams Center in December, 2008. She holds a Ph.D. in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Tomoko also has a M.A. in counseling psychology from CIIS and is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist.

As a marriage and family therapist she views clinical issues as originating in problems people experience in their relationships. When she is not at the Adams Center she helps students to address cultural adjustments in social and academic contexts. She has extensive experience working with people who have a history of childhood sexual abuse and assault.

Tomoko’s fundamental approach is humanistic. She believes every human has the potential to grow and to become whole. She believes that the process towards wholeness is a spiritual as well as psychological process. On that foundation she utilizes techniques which originate in cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and other theories. Examples include: EMDR for trauma work, Imago relationship therapy for couples work, and Process Oriented Psychology for mind-body awareness. She is a Japanese native and has been living in the U.S. for about twenty years.
